Writing and Editorial Services

During her tenure at the ACLU, Emily Whitfield wrote hundreds of news releases, fact sheets, op-eds and letters to the editor, and collaborated on advertising copy and web content. She also co-authored two reports on Internet free speech issues and conceived and wrote “The Year in Civil Liberties,” an annual review of the ACLU’s major cases and controversies (1996-2000).

“Emily is a gifted writer and editor. Over the years we collaborated on countless op-eds and letters to the editor, and she was always a delightful colleague — brimming over with ideas and information, and conveying them with maximum effectiveness.”
Nadine Strossen, former ACLU president (1991-2008) and professor of law at New York Law School.

Like many communications professionals, words are Emily’s passion and she enjoys the challenge of framing complex legal and social issues for a mass-media audience. She also enjoys transferring her skills to others and has conducted training sessions in op-ed writing and message development for the ACLU and other organizations.
